Statement on the Passing of John Spratt
Congressman John Spratt, a former longtime Representative from South Carolina and a member of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, died Saturday at the age of 82. The following is a statement from Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget:
John Spratt was a passionate and devoted public servant who worked tirelessly to ensure a stronger and more prosperous future for our nation. All of us at the Committee were deeply honored to have had the guidance of such a remarkable friend and colleague.
Across nearly three decades in Congress, John showed his commitment toward fiscal responsibility and toward reaching across the aisle to get the job done. His Chairmanship of the House Budget Committee, his leadership in passing the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 that led to budget surpluses, and his appointment to the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform were the hallmarks of a career of public service of the highest order.
The Committee is deeply saddened by the parting of a bipartisan leader, a fiscal champion, a fierce friend, and a beloved member of our organization. John’s wisdom, devotion, and kindness will be deeply missed.
