Marjorie Margolies: Treat pandemic but don’t forget debt
Marjorie Margolies is president of Women’s Campaign International and a member of the board of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. She represented Pennsylvania's 13th district in Congress from 1993 to 1995. She recently wrote a piece for The Morning Call, an excerpt of which is below:
With a pandemic gripping the nation, it’s easy to ignore the pandemic of our national debt, which has now eclipsed $20 trillion. Most people can’t even fathom what a number that large means to their daily lives. Why should we care?
It’s a bit easier to understand when you think about how much debt that is per person in the United States, especially for our youngest generation. Every new child welcomed into the world is already saddled with nearly $62,000 in government debt from the start of his or her life.
